Addis Ababa — Presidents of Universities in Amhara Region and the Regional Education Bureau held a joint discussion on efforts to address and mitigate the challenges that have affected teaching and learning in recent years. During the discussion, it was noted that Universities have played a significant role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools and educational infrastructure damaged as a result of conflicts in recent years. In particular, efforts to sustain teaching and learning, in conflict-affected areas, were reported to have produced encouraging results. Accordingly, the following major points were highlighted: Tutorial classes provided to improve the performance of Grade 12 students, psychological support and development programs for students, as well as support for digital, science, and engineering skills development, were reported to have been effectively implemented. The effectiveness of advocacy and media activities undertaken to encourage conflicting parties in conflict-affected areas to respect international laws and protect schools from harm was acknowledged and appreciated. With regard to future directions, emphasis was placed on the need to work intensively to prevent the educational disruptions and setbacks inherited from previous years from continuing into the current academic year. Finally, att the conclusion of the meeting, a common direction was established for universities to use their research, knowledge, and resource-mobilization capacities to provide stronger support to the general education sector. Universities were encouraged to take greater ownership of supporting the sector, strengthen and sustain the support initiatives already underway, and provide special assistance to children with outstanding talents in technology and innovation. It was also agreed to further strengthen the relationship and collaboration between the Regional Education Bureau and universities, with the aim of making the coming academic year more effective and successful.
